Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot and Kristen Wiig praised the DC film, saying it doesn’t feel like a typical sequel.
There’s still several months to go until Wonder Woman 1984 arrives in theaters, but Gal Gadot and Kristen Wiig are excited for fans to see the new story, praising the story for not feeling like a usual sequel. Gal Gadot told Total Film the story doesn’t start with the ending of the first film, but picks up over 60 years later. The star was quick to point out that the only DNA shared by the 2017 film and the sequel is the relationship between Diana Prince and Steve Trevor.
“We don’t pick up the story where we left it last, because it was 66 years ago. So she’s been living for over six decades by herself, in man’s world, serving mankind and doing good. And this story is a story of its own. I mean, the only thing that we share in both stories is probably, you know, the fact that it’s Diana Prince and also Steve Trevor. But other than that, it’s a whole new world, and the era is different, and Diana is different, and the story is new.”
Kristen Wiig backed up her co-star on Wonder Woman 1984 feeling unique, explaining that everything about it makes it stand-alone from other sequels. She jokingly pointed out the difference in posters before noting that she meant the style of the film. Gal Gadot followed up by explaining that the sequel evolves Diana in new ways following her fight in the first Wonder Woman film.
KW: “It really doesn’t feel like a sequel in that… everything’s different. The posters, the music, everything… Obviously the posters are different! I meant, like the style! A lot of time, with the sequel, you want to show the connection to the first one. And this one…”
GG: “It’s totally of its own. It’s true. And I feel, in the first movie, a big thing that we played off was the naiveté of Diana. And she’s not naive anymore. She’s been around. She’s wiser. She’s more mature. We meet a very much evolved character in this one.”
