The streaming debut of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 has given HBO Max a monumental boost in its number of subscribers.

Although it was disappointing that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 was released in theaters as well as on HBO Max, the film was mostly seen by audiences at home thanks to the ongoing pandemic. And although it wasn’t as well received as the first film, the sequel has helped boost the amount of subscribers paying for the streaming service. HBO Max had a rocky start, but AT&T has announced that it’s already reached the forecasted number of subscribers two years in advance.

The Gal Gadot sequel is one of the first major blockbusters on Warner Bros.’ 2021 slate which debuted simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. And although there were reservations from directors over the radical move, it’s paid off for the company. Wonder Woman 1984 helped boost the streaming service to 37.66 million subscribers, and combined with customers subscribed to the HBO app, the two services have a combined figure of 41.5 million subscribers.

Patty Jenkins returns to direct the next chapter in the story, which finds Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) living and working among mortals, remaining selfless in a vibrant era of excess and “having it all.” But her own values are challenged as she reunites with a lost love while stepping into the spotlight to help humanity escape a dangerous world of its own making. Also starring Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, the film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.
