During a red carpet interview with Variety, Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg commented on the future of Gambit and other X-Men films after Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s assets.

Even before The Walt Disney Company completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets, Channing Tatum’s X-Men movie centered on Gambit was troubled and delayed. Now that 20th Century Fox is under the Disney umbrella, X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg revealed fans will have to wait and see what the future holds for Gambit as Disney is currently evaluating Fox’s projects:

“The latest is, we’ll see. Since the merger happened, I think all of the movies that are at Fox, not just the Marvel movies, but all of the movies at Fox are being evaluated and they’ll figure out what they want to do with them.”

The X-Men producer did note that he hopes to see the Gambit move forward:

“I would love to see it happen. I love the idea of Channing playing Gambit. I think we have a great script for it and I think it’s a role he was born to play. It’s a character I grew up loving and I know the fans love. So I suspect, I hope it will happen”

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
