HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed a Game of Thrones spin-off following Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark is not happening.
Spoilers ahead for Game of Thrones Season 8!
In the series finale of Game of Thrones, Arya Stark’s story concluded with her sailing west of Westeros into uncharted territory. Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark has become one of the most beloved characters on Game of Thrones, especially after her defeat of the Night King. Many Game of Thrones fans were hoping one of the many spin-off shows in development would follow Arya Stark after the events of the final season. However, HBO programming president Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter that an Arya Stark spin-off series is not in development:
“Nope, nope, nope. No. Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David’s show — to be its own thing. I don’t want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it. I want to let it be the artistic piece they’ve got. That’s one of reasons why I’m not trying to do the same show over. George has massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That’s why we’re trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and re-do the same show. That’s probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn’t make sense for us.”

Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse are set to star in the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off. Joining them are Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Shella Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo. Character details are being kept under wraps but the series will take place thousands of years before the events of the recently wrapped series.
David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill wrote the final six episodes, which have been directed by David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik, with Benioff and Weiss helming the series finale. Benioff and Weiss returned to executive produce the final season alongside Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield, with Bryan Cogman, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin serving as co-executive producers.
George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” depicts two powerful families — kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men — all playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne. Winter is coming.
