Perhaps the most controversial superhero costume of all time, George Clooney’s Batsuit from Batman & Robin, is going up for auction with a starting bid of $40,000.
The Batman & Robin Batsuit lives on in infamy for its inclusion of the aptly dubbed “Bat-nipples.” While this costume detail was originally added for Val Kilmer’s Caped Crusader in Batman Forever, these anatomically accurate additions to the Batsuit were even more prominent in George Clooney’s turn as the Dark Knight.
Heritage Auctions will be auctioning off the Batman & Robin costume from July 22-23 and the opening bid sits at $40,000.
Bat-Credit Cards At The Ready
Following the recent passing of Batman & Robin director Joel Schumacher, there might be a few more fans willing to reassess their opinion of George Clooney’s Batman appearance. However, with that hefty price tag, it will take more than a renewed appreciation for the DC movie for a fan to get their hands on Clooney’s suit.
Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, discussed the notorious superhero costume in a statement on the auction. Reflecting on the Batsuit and Joel Schumacher’s work on the films, Maddalena said:
“This is easily the most famous – and infamous – Batman costume ever designed, as evidenced by the fact that all these years later, it continues to make headlines every time Tim Burton and George Clooney get asked about it. But to his credit, Joel Schumacher never apologized for the ‘Bat-nipples.’ In fact, he once told Vice, ‘I’m still glad we did it.’ And I am just as glad we have the chance now to offer this piece of cinema history to someone who can appreciate the costume as much as Schumacher clearly did.”
The “Bat-nipples” may have been a divisive addition to the Batsuit, but this iconic piece of Batman’s cinematic history will surely make an impressive addition to one fan’s memorabilia collection.
The Caped Crusader’s latest – smooth-chested – appearance on the big screen was delivered by Robert Pattinson in The Batman. Here is the synopsis:
“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.
The film is now streaming exclusively on HBO Max and is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding The Batman and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
