George Clooney recently made his grand return as Batman in The Flash. However, unless someone finds a secret treasure chest of nose candy, it seems he isn’t too keen to return to the DC Universe.
Many fans speculated that The Flash secretly snuck in a reveal about the new DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran, with George Clooney replacing Michael Keaton as Batman. However, The Flash never confirmed if Clooney will stick around as the DC Comics hero. It seems not even Clooney himself thinks that’s a good idea, as he recently told Entertainment Tonight that “there aren’t enough drugs in the world” for him to play Batman again.
While it’s certainly a shame that George Clooney won’t be returning, The Flash seemed to teach Warner Bros. a very important lesson: Sometimes just having old names isn’t enough to sell a product. Hopefully whoever plays the new Batman in the DC Universe is able to bring the character to greater heights!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
