Former Batman Actor George Clooney Believes Ben Affleck Deserves Another Oscar

"Never leave the cave without it!"

Batman George Clooney Ben Affleck Oscar

Former Batman actor George Clooney believes Ben Affleck deserves another Oscar.

Both George Clooney and Ben Affleck share a close connection in their careers. For one, not only have they worked together in the past, including as producers on Ben Affleck’s Argo, which awarded the pair Academy Awards for Best Picture, but also as fellow actors that have had the privilege of playing Batman on the big screen.

In George Clooney’s case, his role in Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin is quite infamous, and the film is widely considered not just one of the worst comic book films ever made, but perhaps one of the worst films period. George Clooney is public about his disdain for the film, and throughout Ben Affleck’s tenure in the role, he’s been pretty supportive of him.

While promoting his new film The Tender Bar, in which he directs Ben Affleck, George Clooney had nothing but love and praise for the actor, he tells Deadline:

“I have to say the thing that’s so cool about that is Ben really showed up, and he stuck his neck out, and yes, he’s gotten a SAG award nomination and a Golden Globe nomination. He deserves it. He put his neck out there, and he really worked hard on this, and he hasn’s been acknowledged much as an actor, and he’s a really wonderful actor.”

George Clooney also reflected on Ben Affleck’s life and career in recent years, which had been subject to much media scrutiny. He continued to heap on praise for his fellow Batman actor:

“I looked at this as a real showcase for Ben, and you know, Ben’s been through the ringer. He’s been as high as you could get,. He stood on the stage and won a couple of Oscars. He knows what it’s like to be at the top of the game, and he also has had some rough patches. Some of them, as he has said many times, self-inflicted, but he’s a fighter, and he’s been out there, and he showed up on this one in such a big way and in such a gracious way, and he’s been doing it for a bit, and it’s fun to see the reactions towards him, and it’d be lovely if the same sort of attention was carried on [to the Oscars]. I think he would deserve it.”

George Clooney and Ben Affleck are in an exclusive group of actors that have portrayed Batman in live-action on the big screen. This list includes Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale and in just over a month before his first film hits theaters, Robert Pattinson. Here is the synopsis for the upcoming film, The Batman:

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
