Was George Clooney the next big face headed to the MCU? A rumor reveals that he was originally planned to have a role in The Marvels before it was scrapped!
It’s clear from watching The Marvels that not every idea that the team had for the film made it onto the screen. That’s true for basically every MCU film. The “Marvel Method” necessitates predicting what assets are needed for a project, premaking them, and then inevitably scrapping quite a bit of them. It’s also a pretty decent excuse for the rumor mill when they get stuff wrong.
However, it seems as though The Marvels may have scrapped one of the biggest headlines that could have hit the MCU. A rumor from MyTimeToShineHello suggests that George Clooney was initially eyed for a role in the project. However, it may have not been in the capacity many fans would have hoped for.
“The original plan for The Marvels was to cast a well known name (they were looking at Clive Owen and George Clooney) to play a big Marvel hero from the comics who we think will have a big role in the movie but then dies at the end of the first act. That was scrapped”
George Clooney’s Role In The MCU
Since this rumor came out, there’s been quite a lot of speculation about what role George Clooney could have played in the MCU. Given both Captain Marvel and The Marvels were defined by trying to subvert expectations for a superhero film, it’s possible that the sequel would have seen Clooney appear as the TRUE Mar-Vell; only to get very quickly obliterated.
Of course, the one upside of George Clooney’s role in The Marvels getting scrapped is that it’s possible he could be brought into the MCU down the line to play a more substantial part. Though, given his grievances around playing Batman, it’s not likely he straps on spandex anytime soon!
