Could the director of Godzilla Minus One be joining the MCU? Takashi Yamazaki reveals he’s spoken to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about the possibility.
Godzilla Minus One is one of Hollywood’s few true underdog stories. It was a foreign-language film with a relatively small budget when compared to most modern blockbusters. Despite this, the project managed to make massive waves both critically and commercially upon its release, skyrocketing director Takashi Yamazaki into a superstar in nerd culture nearly overnight.
The success of Godzilla Minus One left many fans wondering if Takashi Yamazaki might consider hopping across the pond to serve as the director for any number of blockbuster franchises, with speculation ranging from the MCU to King Kong. It seems at least one of these almost came true, with Yamazaki revealing that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressed interest in having him helm a project, even if he doesn’t believe it would come to pass.
“The president of Marvel He told me, ‘We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that,'” Yamazaki explained during a recent appearance at Godzilla Fest 2024 transcribed by VirtualGorilla+ “I think it’s just lip service.”
What Project Could Takashi Yamazaki Helm In The MCU?
Marvel Studios certainly has no shortage of projects that could fit into the style of Godzilla Minus One. One obscure character that might be a perfect fit is Kid Kaiju, a young Inhuman with the ability to summon giant monsters from his drawings. Given Kevin Feige’s streak of converting Inhumans to Mutants in the MCU, such a project helmed by Takashi Yamazaki could be a surprising inclusion in the studios’ upcoming Mutant Saga.
However, more likely than not, it’s likely that Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel Studios team didn’t have any specific project in mind when approaching Takashi Yamazaki. Rather, they simply broached the director’s interest in joining the MCU following the smash success of Godzilla Minus One just in case something came along that might fit his particular skills and interests.
