‘Gotham Knights’: First Minutes Of Batgirl Gameplay Released

The game arrives in October.

The first few minutes of gameplay in Gotham Knights have been released and focus on Batgirl.

Back in August 2020, during DC FanDome, Warner Bros. Montréal finally unveiled their long-rumored Batman game, which will actually focus on the Bat Family. Along with the Gotham Knights reveal trailer, the developer also shared gameplay of Batgirl infiltrating Mr. Freeze’s hideout and taking him on.

Batgirl Begins

Since then, we’ve gotten several new looks at Gotham Knights, but IGN has now released the first 16-minutes of gameplay as Batgirl. The gameplay mechanics are very similar to what we’ve gotten in Rocksteady’s Arkham games, but Gotham Knights doesn’t take place in that universe. The gameplay also reveals that early on, the Bat Family will track down Kirk Langstrom, otherwise known as Man-Bat in the comics. You can check out the gameplay footage below.

Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding told IGN that the Bat Family wouldn’t be inexperienced at the start, so players can expect to have more tools at their disposal:

“It was very important for us that these heroes, our Knights are… They’re already awesome at the start of the game. It’s not a function of them being ineffective as crime fighters, quite the opposite. They are all effectively graduates of the Batman School of Crime Fighting. So when they start, they are at their most similar, in the sense that they have a lot of these basic tools of combat and stealth, and moving around in the world and using their grapple. And then it’s really over the course of the game that they fully diverge into their own flavor of what a Dark Knight of Gotham City should be.”

Game director Geoff Ellenor added that while the Bat-Family already has some crime-fighting experience under their utility belt, there are still going to face plenty of challenges:

“We didn’t want to do a dungeon crawler RPG where we send you into the forest to kill six slugs and return with your stick. These are ultimately very interesting people who have been trained by Batman and by others. They’re very intelligent. They’re very capable. But they still have this challenge of rising to the level of, ‘what does it take to protect Gotham City now that Batman is gone?’ There is an RPG progression, but they’re not starting from zero by any stretch. They’re already pretty rocking by the time you take the controller. We don’t want you to have that moment where one bad guy in an alley with a baseball bat is going to give you a hard time. That said, there are some mini-bosses in the game that are decently strong, and you have to pay attention a little bit in the beginning.”

Here is the synopsis for Gotham Knights:

Batman is dead. It is now up to the Batman Family – Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin – to protect Gotham City, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals. You must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save Gotham from chaos.

Gotham Knights will be released on October 25, 2022, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding all the upcoming DC games, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
