Here is why Gotham Knights is not set in the same universe as the Batman: Arkham games.

Gotham Knights, a new video game from Warner Bros. Games Montreal is the latest to take on the legacy of the Dark Knight. What makes it distinct from games like the Batman: Arkham series is how it takes Bruce Wayne out of the picture, and instead focuses on some key figures in the Bat-Family.

Given the popularity the Batman: Arkham games, some have wondered why Gotham Knights isn’t set in the same universe. Well, Patrick Redding, creative director at Warner Bros. Games Montreal shared why this story is separate, despite the studio having developed Arkham Origins, which was released back in 2013. You can read his comments down below from the official Discord for the upcoming game, via TheDirect.com:

“The rich mythology to the Batman universe itself. We wanted to be able to interpret and adapt the characters – that’s both the heroes and their rogues’ gallery – in new ways that would support a new player experience and progression. We wanted to be able to write the history of these characters with an original story without being tied to a particular continuity or feature set.”

The Versatility of Batman Lore.

Gotham Knights looks to tell its own original story that is based within the history of the Caped Crusader, even though it is separate from the established canon of the popular Batman: Arkham games. Part of this is due to the fact that he is dead in this upcoming game, which would be a disappointing development for fans of that particular video game series.

Whether it is through video games, TV series and/or films, the lore of Batman provides some of the most versatile opportunities for storytelling given its history that spans more than 80 years. So much so, that with its current slate, Warner Bros. seems to rely heavily on the character’s popularity that it is allowing multiple different versions of the character to be featured in upcoming films, whether it’s Robert Pattinson’s ongoing film series, or the DC Extended Universe which looks to bring back Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s versions of the character for the upcoming film, The Flash.

Here is the synopsis for Gotham Knights:

Batman is dead. It is now up to the Batman Family – Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin – to protect Gotham City, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals. You must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save Gotham from chaos.

Gotham Knights will be released on October 25, 2022, and playable on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
