Could the Green Lantern series have been peak? Jeremy Irvine reflects on his time working on the HBO show that was ultimately cancelled.

Excitement is high for Lanterns, a prestige HBO series set in the new DC Universe. But what some fans may forget is that the aforementioned show was actually built on the gravestone of Green Lantern, an HBO series in the works for years prior to James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios, with stars like Jeremy Irvine and Finn Wittrock already attached to star.

Despite the years upon years that Green Lantern was in development, surprisingly few details are concretely known about the cancelled series. During a recent sit-down with The Direct to talk about his upcoming film Turbulence, Jeremy Irvine reflected on his experience working on the project, revealing that he was gutted when the project was canned in favor of a new DC Universe.

“I was so gutted. I think I slept on my floor that night when I found out that it wasn’t going to happen. In this industry, I always like to say that you get one kick in the nuts every year as an actor. And that, I remember, that one being a being a hard one because I had some really good ideas for it, I thought…But you know, there’ll be something else where we get to incorporate it.”

“But it was just a really nice story; the way it was written was really cool. The scripts were great. And I hope one day it happens, and I hope whoever does it gets to have an amazing time.”

The Green Lantern Series DC Buried

It’s always a shame when an amazing project ends up cancelled for no fault of the creative team behind it. Though, with the DC Universe taking a brand new direction, some fans may be hoping that details about the cancelled series will finally come out online. However, according to Jeremy Irvine, the NDAs he had for the Green Lantern show remain tight.

“I think I probably signed more NDA’s for that than ever before in my life. So no, I’d rather not go to court with Mr. James Gunn. I’d quite like to work with him again.”

Of course, NDAs are not magic. It’s possible that a script or two from the Green Lantern series finds its way online similar to the cancelled Beast film starring Nicholas Hoult. Though, given Jeremy Irvine and the others involved in the project seem ready to move on from the DC Universe, it’ll likely be years, if not decades, if it even does happen.

The Green Lantern series Lanterns is currently in production for HBO. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe!
