Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has opened up about his experience following being temporarily fired from Marvel Studios, revealing the important life lesson he learned in the process.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 serves as a shining beacon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the eyes of many fans. However, fans were close to living in a world where Marvel Studios hired someone else to helm the end of the trilogy. Back in July of 2018, Guardians director James Gunn was fired from Marvel Studios following the discovery of a number of very controversial tweets from his past.
James Gunn was eventually brought back to Marvel Studios once the fire of the controversy died down. However, there was a time when the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and Gunn’s career, was up in the air. Gunn spoke about the pain he felt in an interview with OneMan.
“On one hand, it was a very painful period and there are moments when I recall it and say to myself, ‘God, why were you so stupid?’ On the other hand, I am grateful for that period, because I think it came at a moment of my life when I really needed it,” He explained. “I had forgotten the reason I make movies. What was important to me. I also didn’t know how much my people loved me. I used to be the person who worked hard, who could depend on his status and fame to receive love.”
James Gunn continued on about how important that support from the people who loved him was. The love he got from his partner, his family, and even the Guardians of the Galaxy crew made him realize people love him for who he truly is:
“Then suddenly I realized that I had the most wonderful people by my side. My partner, who is now my wife, my parents, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen, Pom. They all supported me,” He continued. “Sometimes you think that people love you because you have a certain power, but at that point, none of that was true. They loved me for who I was. They were there whatever happened. Whatever the end result would be. They didn’t support me because I make movies. It was a great life lesson for me and I truly am grateful.”
It’s fitting that James Gunn was saved from such a dark place by the love of his friends and family, given the themes of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Often its easier to judge than forgive, especially on social media. Gunn’s story reminds fans that everyone is human and can find triumph even in the darkest of times. It seems as though DC Studios is in good hands with Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairs.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
