Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn revealed that the inter-galactic team’s third outing will feature a character’s death.
James Gunn blew fans away in 2014 when he debuted the Guardians of the Galaxy, a team of would-be planet-jumping anti-heroes who turned out to be actual good folk. The team was unlike anything the Marvel Cinematic Universe had to offer at the time, especially when placed against the more well-adjusted Avengers who debuted just two years earlier. With its sequel in 2017, Gunn once again poured his heart and soul into the characters, making it one of the most heart-felt films in the MCU, especially its ending which saw fan-favorite Yondu dying.
Death is an integral part of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, with the first film quite literally opening on Peter Quill’s mother dying. And while we don’t know what exactly the third film in the franchise will bring, director James Gunn has confirmed that someone in the film will die. During his Saturday evening Instagram Stories Q&A, Gunn was asked if someone in the film would die. Gunn replied with a simple “yes”.
The problem, of course, lies in not knowing who is exactly will die in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. The vagueness of both the question and the answer is not necessarily divulging any new information. Gunn’s answer could also literally mean that “Yes, someone will die”, as in literally anyone. In an action-film like Guardians of the Galaxy, about half a dozen bad guys are killed every 15-30 minutes, so of course someone will die. As for any main characters who will die, it’s pretty had to even speculate as we’re not even sure what the full roster of the team will be. It wouldn’t be surprising if any of them died, as the third film in the franchise is expected to be the final for this iteration of characters.

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC, which he is currently editing from the safety from his home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Details on the third chapter of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
