Filming has wrapped on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and James Gunn offered fans a look at his wrap gift from Marvel Studios, revealing Groot’s new look for the special.
When Groot first entered the MCU in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the walking and talking tree was a fully-grown adult Flora Colossus. When he sacrificed himself to save the team at the end of that film, Rocket took a twig from Groot’s remains to grow a new Groot. Groot was therefore only a baby when he next appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though the mid-credits scenes jumped forward in time to reveal the moody adolescent Groot who would go on to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. A taller version of teenage Groot also appears in the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder.
James Gunn’s wrap gift on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special offers a look at Groot’s latest growth spurt in the Disney Plus special. Posting on Twitter, Gunn confirmed filming had concluded with two photos of a box of baubles gifted to him by Marvel Studios. Each one features an image of a character from the special and the picture of Groot reveals the character more or less back to his adult form. He may not be as fully grown as he was back in the first Guardians film, but it looks like Groot has finally left adolescence behind. Check out the images below:
As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be the final installment featuring the MCU’s original iteration of the spacefaring team, fans will surely be happy to see the original Groot making a comeback in time for the Guardians’ grand finale.
Along with the MCU holiday special, James Gunn is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023, while The Holiday Special will be available to stream on Disney Plus this holiday season.
