It seems as though Star Wars fans have been robbed of the perfect project! Guillermo del Toro recently revealed scrapped plans to direct a Star Wars film written by David Goyer.
The idea of a Star Wars film written by David Goyer, the mind behind Blade and Man of Steel, is certainly salivating. Hellboy and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro helming it is simply icing on the cake. After Goyer revealed the scrapped project for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, del Toro chimed in to tease a character involved with the film:
All signs point to “J” and “BB” being a hint toward Jabba the Hutt, with Guillermo del Toro previously expressing his desire to make a “The Godfather-style” origin story for the Star Wars villain.
“This is not real, this is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it,” del Toro told Yahoo Movies back in 2015. “I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”
It seems odd that Guillermo del Toro and David Goyer’s scrapped film isn’t the only Star Wars project developed by an influential director revolving around a crime boss taking over Tatooine, with James Mangold revealing his similarly cancelled Boba-Fett project. While it’s a shame these films will never see the light of day, fans can only hope the concept art Goyer mentioned finds the light of day!
The future of Star Wars looks brighter than ever
The announcement of these three new Star Wars movies marks an exciting time for fans of the franchise. With each movie being directed by a different filmmaker, there is sure to be a unique perspective and style brought to each project.
The focus on new characters and storylines within the Star Wars universe is also promising. While the original trilogy will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans, it’s important to keep the franchise evolving and exploring new avenues. The new Jedi order, as promised in the third movie, could provide an interesting look at the future of the Star Wars universe and the continued use and understanding of The Force.
