Hailee Steinfeld has provided an update on the status of Sony’s all-female Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spin-off.
The project was first revealed to be in development along with a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel back in 2018, a month prior to the animated superhero pic hitting theaters. While the Spider-Verse sequel is in development, targetting a 2022 release date, it seems there has not been any movement on the female spin-0ff as Steinfeld is unaware of the project’s status. Steinfeld is of course expected to lead the spin-0ff, having voiced Spider-Gwen in the original Oscar-winning film.
When asked by Entertainment Tonight whether or not the Spider-Verse spin-off was being discussed, Steinfeld revealed she has no idea:
“Not that I know of, I am not in the know with these things.”
The Spider-Verse sequel was originally expected to debut in April of 2022, however, the studio has had to reschedule its line-up of Spider-Man films due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Steinfeld added that with given the world going on pause due to the global health crisis, she thinks this is now the opportune time to “figure out” the project:
“It’s funny, because I feel like this is the time to figure it out. But I do think, obviously, everything has kind of been slightly put on hold. So there hasn’t been much that I’ve heard lately.”
As for what to expect from the highly-anticipated Spider-Verse sequel, plot details remain under wraps, however, producer Phil Lord hinted that fans could see Supaidāman, the Spider-Man from the 1978 Japanese TV show referred to as “Japanese Spider-Man” in the United States make an appearance.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse:
