Obi-Wan Kenobi, the latest Star Wars series to hit Disney Plus, sees Hayden Christensen reprise the role of Darth Vader and the actor put in some serious work to inhabit the Sith Lord’s iconic suit.
While series such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have followed new characters or minor figures from Star Wars‘ central Skywalker Saga, with the likes of Luke Skywalker consigned to the sidelines, Obi-Wan Kenobi is the first live-action spinoff to follow two of the central characters from the Star Wars movies. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen return as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader respectively, roles they last played in 2005’s Star Wars Episode IIi: Revenge of the Sith.
Recently, Hayden Christensen spoke about what it took for him to become Darth Vader again and how he had to pile on the pounds to embody the intimidating dark sider.
Becoming Darth Vader
Having spent so much time away from the role of Darth Vader, Hayden Christensen was tasked with finding his way back into the character when he was invited back for Obi-Wan Kenobi. One of the elements Christensen felt the need to recapture in order to become Vader once again was the character’s physicality.
Speaking to Fatherly about reprising the role of Star Wars‘ most iconic villain, Hayden Christensen revealed that filling out Vader’s suit meant bulking up. The actor revealed:
“I think that process was very important for me. I needed to become that character again, physically. I just consumed as many calories as possible. I put on 25 or 30 pounds to fill out that [Darth Vader] suit. I try to avoid the dad bod thing. And I was trying to maintain that Vader body after we finished. But, honestly, I pretty much just went back to my old diet. I kind of deflated after that.”
While Hayden Christensen is sharing the Darth Vader suit with stuntmen Dmitrious Bistrevsky and Tom O’Connell, his work certainly paid off, as the villain is more impressive than ever in his latest comeback.
