The Harry Potter reboot has officially started production! HBO has shared the first look at Dominic McLaughlin as the beloved Boy Who Lived.
Over the past few months, HBO has slowly been assembling an all-star cast for the upcoming Harry Potter reboot. From big names like John Lithgow as Gandalf and Nick Frost as Hagrid, to unknowns like Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Dominic McLauhglin as Harry Potter himself, it’s clear that the production is do or die for the controversial cultural juggernaut.
This is why HBO is starting early when it comes to promoting the series. With production on the show officially starting up, the studio revealed the first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter in the upcoming series. Of course, there’s not much that can be gleamed from the image, but it does give fans their sneak peek that Hogwarts’ newest class will be wearing.
HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Gamble
To say that the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series is a gamble is perhaps the understatement of the century. While the franchise has remained a cultural juggernaut since it ended nearly 15 years ago, Warner Bros. Discovery has failed to capitalize off it. The Fantastic Beasts franchise was a historic flop, and supplemental material like the Cursed Child stage play left much to be desired for longterm fans. In fact, the only financial success the IP has had is at theme parks made by Universal!
Making a reboot of Harry Potter seems to be Warner Bros’ last swing at making the franchise work in live-action. It’s a risky proposition, not only due to the author’s controversial reputation, but because the series is set to be incredibly expensive. The only way the investment pays off is if the show makes it through an eight season run- something less than guaranteed given seasons of modern prestige TV often take over a year to make.
