James Mangold has shared a look back at Logan after news that Hugh Jackman is set to play Wolverine again in Deadpool 3 – and assured fans Jackman’s return doesn’t impact Logan.

Ryan Reynolds recently took to social media to drop the shocking news that Deadpool 3 would feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Following his last outing as the character in Logan, Hugh Jackman had said he was hanging up the claws for good. But, like any great action hero, it looks like he’s been coaxed out of retirement for one last mission.

The brutal, emotional, R-rated Logan ended with the tragic death of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. In hilariously blunt fashion, James Mangold decided to refresh the actor’s memory as to exactly why he had previously vowed never to play Logan again.

What Does Deadpool 3 Mean For Logan?

Taking to Twitter to respond to the news, James Mangold initially shared a single GIF of the moment Wolverine is fatally impaled in Logan, before later having to clarify he wasn’t upset about the character’s return.

While James Mangold’s original tweet only showed Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being killed by his own clone, leading some fans to assume the director was upset with the character’s return, Mangold later clarified that it was meant in good humor. “Everybody chill,” the director wrote, before saying he “cannot wait” to see Jackman and Ryan Reynolds together in Deadpool 3.

Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman responded to Mangold’s tweet with their own messages of appreciation for the Logan director, who they dubbed the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time).

A video recently shared by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman appeared to suggest that Deadpool 3 takes place before Logan – which is set in 2029 – and so will not affect the character’s ultimate demise in that movie. James Mangold and many fans replying to his tweet have also pointed out this could be a Wolverine from elsewhere in Marvel’s Multiverse.

Here is the official synopsis for Logan:
