Could Justice League: Mortal have been the perfect DC film? A new look at the cancelled project reveals how Hugh Keays-Byrne would have looked as Martian Manhunter.

Justice League: Mortal is one of the strangest pieces of DC’s cinematic history. Back in 2007, right at the fulcrum point of superhero mania on the silver screen, Warner Bros. recruited Mad Max director George Miller to adapt the iconic Justice League to film. This would have featured the team’s original roster, including the late Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter.

What came next was a grim preview of DC’s struggles to build a cinematic universe over the next decade and a half. Behind-the-scenes drama between director George Miller and the studio and a writers strike eventually led to Justice League: Mortal being put on indefinite hiatus before eventually being cancelled.

Martian Manhunter’s Uncanny Look In Justice League: Mortal

While details about the tragic cancellation of Justice League: Mortal have trickled out over the years, including concept art for the Batcave, DC has managed to keep a tight hold on what Hugh Keays-Byrne would have looked like as Martian Manhunter, with the only glimpses fans have gotten being of group photos. However, recently new photos have surfaced showing exactly how the actor would have looked up close.

It shouldn’t come as a shock to fans of George Miller’s work that the director would make Martian Manhunter looks slightly uncanny in Justice League: Mortal. The photos are oddly alien in ways that modern films and CGI struggle to capture, making Hugh Keays-Byrne the most accurate depiction of the DC character to never formally hit the silver screen.
