James Gunn On If He’d Do Another Project With Idris Elba As Bloodsport

Could we be seeing Bloodsport in 'Peacemaker' Season 2?

James Gunn discusses whether or not he’ll do another project with Idris Elba as Bloodsport.

When it comes to making comic book films and TV series, perhaps there is no one busier than James Gunn. He is currently working on post-production for his long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and is also developing Season 2 of Peacemaker. Along with both of these projects, he also has some other projects at DC in the works, and some are hoping that perhaps it could lead to another opportunity to work with Idris Elba as Bloodsport again.

Idris Elba‘s Bloodsport was arguably the protagonist of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The performance was universally well-received as one of the highlights of the film, and given the character’s fate, some are curious as to whether or not we will see him return in the future, whether it’d be in a sequel, or any of his upcoming original series being developed for HBO Max like Peacemaker or the Amanda Waller spinoff series that’s reportedly in the works.

Well, James Gunn responded to a fan on Twitter about the prospect of working with Idris Elba again, particularly the Bloodsport character:

James Gunn is pretty occupied.

It’s no secret that James Gunn has quite a bit on his plate. Obviously, he has Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the brain right now given that the film is currently undergoing post-production and is set to hit theaters in less than a year, but beyond his Marvel Studios commitments, he also looks to have a sizable commitment to upcoming DC projects. Given that he has expressed nothing but positive feelings towards working with Idris Elba in the past, perhaps we will see him as Bloodsport again in the future. Whether or not that it could involve his own individual project remains to be seen, but it would certainly be delightful to see the character again.

Idris Elba was last seen a Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad. Here is the synopsis:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is available on Blu-ray, 4K, DVD, and Digital, while Peacemaker is streaming on HBO Max.
