Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to take the world by storm this June when fiction’s favorite archeologist takes up his whip one last time. However, before audiences will be able to see film’s treasure trove of wonders, viewers at the Cannes Film Festival will be the first to see it in May.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny serves as the fifth and final installment in the Indiana Jones franchise. This is also the second time an Indiana Jones film has made its debut at Cannes Film Festival, with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull debuting fifteen years before to the day. Director James Mangold is set to direct the film, being the first time anyone besides Steven Spielberg has directed an Indiana Jones film. When speaking about his experience of being invited to the Cannes Film Festival, Mangold held the honor close to his heart:

“In 1995, I was honored to come to Cannes with my first film as part of Director’s Fortnite,” Mangold said “Twenty-eight years later, I am proud to return with a slightly larger spectacle. My legendary collaborators and I are very excited to share a brand new and final Indiana Jones adventure with you!”

The first trailer for the film shocked audiences with its quality, with many astounded by how realistic the CGI de-aging of Harrison Ford looked for the World War II flashback sequences. The film seems to be honoring its past in more ways than looks, with the film returning to the true spirit of Indiana Jones: punching Nazis and hunting treasures!

The future of Indiana Jones

In addition to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Disney and Lucasfilm are also developing a new series set within the same world as the films. The series is being envisioned as a prequel to 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, with a young version of Abner Ravenwood taking on a central role. Abner is the father of Karen Allen’s Marion Ravenwood and the mentor of Indiana Jones.

If the television series ends up moving forward, the Indiana Jones franchise would be returning to the small screen for the first time since the 1990s. Indy was previously the face of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles on ABC, as well as four television specials from the Family Channel, the network that is now known as Freeform. Harrison Ford made an apppearance in one episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which also starred Sean Patrick Flanery, Corey Carrier and George Hall, with the four actors playing the titular hero across various stages of his life.

Directed by James Mangold, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny also stars Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson and Toby Jones. Mangold co-wrote the script alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is currently slated to hit theaters on June 30, 2023. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the movie and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
