James Gunn and Peter Safran are set to bring the DC Universe into a whole new era with their Chapter One: Gods and Monsters roadmap. According to a rumor, IT star and Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård is being eyed for a role in the new universe.
This rumor, as with all great rumors, started with another rumor. Namely, that The Flash director Andy Muschietti would be directing Batman: The Brave and the Bold. While this has yet to be confirmed, one Twitter user floated Bill Skarsgård’s name as a potential Bruce Wayne for the project. This prompted Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider to say he is being eyed for a role, just not in Batman:
There are only four other films besides Batman: The Brave and the Bold slated for Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Those are Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Authority, and Swamp Thing. Given Bill Skarsgård would likely be eyed for a lead role given how far out the films are, it’s most likely the IT actor would be playing Alec Holland, a.k.a. Swamp Thing. However, given James Gunn is currently in the process of casting Clark Kent in Superman: Legacy, we may see Pennywise flying across the skies of Metropolis sometime soon.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
