James Cameron Compares His ‘Avatar’ Follow-Ups To ‘Lord Of The Rings’

"I had to go create the frickin’ novels from which to adapt it.”

Avatar: The Way of Water Star Wars

James Cameron likened his ambitious Avatar sequels to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

James Cameron’s first Avatar film came out 13 years ago and in 2022, we are finally getting the follow-up with The Way of Water. Cameron has taken his time developing the sequel because he’s not just working on one. Avatar 2 and 3 were filmed back to back with 4 and 5 also expected to film together at a later date. That’s one similarity it has with Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

James Cameron explained to Empire the challenge of working on his Avatar saga that is as expansive as The Lord of the Rings from scratch:

“What I said to the Fox regime at the time was, ‘I’ll do it, but we’ve got to play a larger game here. I don’t want to just do a movie and do a movie and do a movie. I want to tell a bigger story’. I said, ‘Imagine a series of novels like The Lord Of The Rings existed, and we’re adapting them.’ Now, that was great in theory, but then I had to go create the frickin’ novels from which to adapt it.”

Cameron’s Hesitations

Many online have been quick to discount James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar films. The director revealed he also had his doubts and talked about what it took for him to ultimately commit to Pandora:

“I had to think long and hard whether I even wanted to make another Avatar film, because it was kind of ours to lose. When you’ve done something that’s been that transcendent in terms of success, do you really want to go try and do that again? There’s a lot of pressure on it. I thought about it for a good two years before we finally made a deal.”

Here is the synopsis for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
