The first trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water returns viewers back to Pandora.

Finally, after 13 years since the record-breaking original film hit theaters, James Cameron brings audiences back to the world of Pandora with Avatar: The Way of Water. The first official teaser trailer, which was first made available exclusively in theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness this weekend is now available to view online.

The new trailer finally gives us a taste at some of the incredible advancements of technology in the 13 years since the original Avatar blew audiences away. Here, we get caught up with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) as they encounter the newest threat in their lives, which poses some frightening consequences for their family and the rest of Pandora.

I had the opportunity of watching the Avatar 2 trailer on Monday May 2, 2022 in Dolby 3D days ahead of its official premiere in theaters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given that it’s been years since I’ve seen a film projected onto the big screen in 3D, I was particularly blown away at how James Cameron moved the camera throughout certain sequences. I was in awe at how visceral and photorealistic the CGI on the Na’vi look compared to the 2009 film, and certain sequences left me gripping onto my seat given how lifelike the 3D feels, truly transporting audiences back to Pandora.

For years, it’s become cool to talk trash on Avatar, and it feels like we always hear people online express how the film is so “culturally irrelevant” despite being the biggest film of all-time. If you were to ask me, this trailer will certainly leave many viewers eating crow, and besides, doubt James Cameron at your own peril. He’s spent more than a decade preparing for audiences’ return to Pandora. Be prepared for what could perhaps become the must-see movie event of 2022.

Here is the synopsis for James Cameron’s Avatar 2:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana,  Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet.
