The first footage of James Cameron’s Avatar sequel has finally been revealed at CinemaCon, along with the film’s title: Avatar: The Way of Water.
After years of rumors and teases from the filmmakers, the highly anticipated Avatar sequel has been confirmed to be coming to cinemas this December. The title, Avatar: The Way of Water appears to confirm earlier reports that the film will focus on Pandora’s oceans and aquatic life, an area of the luscious planet that was left unexplored in the first film.
The footage shown during Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon was played in 3D and revealed an older Jake Sully, now living in his avatar body. Sam Worthington’s Jake was also seen riding aquatic creatures in underwater scenes and heard uttering the line: “I know one thing, wherever we go, this family is our fortress.” According to producer Jon Landau, Jake’s and Neytiri’s family will form the center of each Avatar movie.
In a recorded message, director James Cameron revealed that Avatar: The Way of Water will build on the technical advances of the first film, saying “We’re pushing those limits even farther, with 3D, high dynamic range, high frame rate, higher resolution…but it’s not just the technical.” The film’s trailer will debut exclusively ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness next week, before an online release the following week.
Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Cliff Curtis. The film will be released in theaters worldwide on December 16, 2022.
