James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has nabbed four nominations for the 95th Academy Awards.

Avatar: The Way of Water is officially up for Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards. The nominations for the event were revealed this morning by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has scheduled the 95th Academy Awards for March 13, 2023, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the ceremony for the third time. The event is being held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California.

Earlier this week, Avatar: The Way of Water crossed the $2 billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office. James Cameron is the only director in history to have three movies with earnings north of $2 billion thanks to the first two entries in the Avatar series and Titanic.

The first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing release in history with $2.923 billion. The movie was at one-point dethroned by the Marvel Studios feature Avengers: Endgame before a re-release put it back on top of the all-time box office charts.

The Way of Water is rated PG-13 and runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes, making it about 30 minutes longer than the first entry in the Avatar series. The sequel is a hit with critics, as it holds a certified fresh ratting on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Its budget is somewhere between $350 million to $400 million.

The cast and storyline of the Avatar sequel

Directed by James Cameron from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet.

Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water synopsis reads as follows: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”
