Just earlier today, news broke that Aaron Pierre would be joining the DC Universe as John Stewart. Fans have already flooded the internet with excitement to see Pierre take on the role of the iconic Green Lantern in Lanterns. They’re not the only ones either, as James Gunn took to social media to congratulate the star on landing the part.
“Welcome to DC, aaron_pierre1,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “After a long and grueling series of auditions I am absolutely sure we’ve found an incredible John Stewart.”
Given how quite the MCU is when it comes to their casting process, it’s an exciting moment to see one of the heads of the DC Universe congratulate Aaron Pierre on landing his role in Lanterns. This makes him the third Green Lantern James Gunn has cast in the reboot, with Pierre’s John Stewart joining Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan.
John Stewart’s Role In The DC Universe
While at this time Aaron Pierre has been cast as John Stewart specifically for Lanterns, it’s clear that’s not the extent of James Gunn’s plans for the Green Lantern Corp in the DC Universe. Given set photos have suggested that yet another member of the intergalactic crimefighters is set to make their debut in Superman, it’s more likely than not a big screen debut is in store for the heroes.
Aaron Pierre will likely lead that charge too. James Gunn has described Lanterns as an older Hal Jordan mentoring the new Green Lantern John Stewart. This suggests that John Stewart will be the main member of the Green Lantern Corp focused on in the series and, by extension, the DC Universe.
