James Gunn Says ‘Plenty Of Things Are In Flux’ With Batman & Damian Wayne

Is Damian Wayne scrapped?

Is James Gunn making some major changes to Batman: The Brave and The Bold? James Gunn teases that fans will have to wait to see what the DC Universe holds for Damian Wayne.

Perhaps the most exciting project that James Gunn has announced for the DC Universe is Batman: The Brave and The Bold. The film won’t just bring Batman into a wider franchise once more, but it’ll introduce Damian Wayne. This marks Robin’s return to the silver screen after nearly 30 years, and the first time all four Robins will be canon to one live-action franchise.

However, this exciting news also left fans questioning how James Gunn will cast Batman. David Corenswet’s Superman is in his 30s. And if Robin is 10 by the time of Batman: The Brave and The Bold, he would’ve had to be conceived rather early to even have Bruce Wayne in his mid-30s. Though, according to Gunn himself, things are currently in flux when it comes to the Caped Crusader’s age.

“No, I think you have to wait to see the movie,” Gunn told IGN. “Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn’t take any of it –”

“Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to… Listen, first of all, I can’t tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth.”

Is Damian Wayne In Batman: The Brave And The Bold?

The wording of “parentage” stood out as odd to fans. James Gunn seems to be suggesting that, despite Batman: The Brave and The Bold being sold as featuring Damian Wayne, the character’s presence in the film is currently up in the air. When pressed on this, Gunn admitted that fans may simply need to see the film to figure out how Robin fits into the DC Universe.

“I think you have to wait to see exactly what’s happening.”

While some may assume this is James Gunn telling fans a different Robin may be in Batman: The Brave and The Bold, it may very well be the opposite. It’s possible that the director plans to change Damian Wayne’s origin for the DC Universe. Instead of being Bruce Wayne’s biological son, he’s a semi-clone created by Talia Al Ghul using his DNA, explaining how the Batman actor can have a child despite being in his 30s.
