How old will Batman and Superman be in the DC Universe? James Gunn clarifies the age difference between the iconic heroes in his upcoming reboot.
Fans have had questions about the age of the World’s Finest heroes ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran first announced their plans for the DC Universe. It’s clear the director is taking the Man of Steel in a new direction with Superman. While it’s not an origin story, the character will be played by David Corenswet, who’s only 30.
In contrast, James Gunn has confirmed that Batman will be a father once he enters into the DC Universe, with Damian Wayne likely being 10-12 years old. So unless Bruce was popping out his kid before he was old enough to drink, fans thought the character would be decently older than Superman, which had the potential to mess up their entire dynamic.
James Gunn Clears The Air On Ages
Many fans have been using James Gunn’s supposed comments at the Annecy Animation Festival about casting a Batman that’s older than Superman to support their point. However, Gunn clarified on Threads that that idea was only a possibility, and says the characters won’t be directly tied to each other in age in the DC Universe.
“I’m pretty sure I didn’t say that. What I said was Bruce ‘could be’ a couple years older than Clark. All I meant was I wasn’t tied to Bruce and Clark being the exact same age.”
It makes sense that James Gunn wouldn’t want to tie Batman’s age to Superman or vice versa. The two have wildly different supporting casts and story arcs. Making Batman a few years older in the DC Universe could very well make sense, but it seems Gunn himself isn’t tied to anything aside from the needs of the story. Let’s just hope he starts casting sometime soon!
