Is James Gunn already casting Batman for the DC Universe? The director reveals his thoughts on the process, as well as new details on the process so far.
Ever since it was announced that James Gunn would be taking up the helm of the DC Universe with Peter Safran, one question has been on the top of everyone’s minds: Who’s playing Batman? The casting of the Caped Crusader has been one of the most viral topics on the internet in recent months, with some calling for big names like Alan Ritchson or Brandon Sklenar to take on the mantle, with others advocating to fold Robert Pattinson into the franchise.
James Gunn actually gave fans some insight to the current state of casting Batman during a recent interview with The Ringer-Verse. He explained that, while he does have some actors that he’d like to play the Dark Knight in the DC Universe, it’s not as simple as plucking a name for the hat. No matter who gets the part, there will have to be (likely very public) screen tests.
“Do I have ideas about actors who could play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are top of the list for me, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman. People can guess and maybe they’ll be right about certain things. We’d have to screen test, we’d have to do the whole thing.”
Who Is Playing Batman In The DC Universe?
Yet it seems that process may be gearing to start up sooner than fans expected. James Gunn goes on to confirm that he has actually met with an actor to play Batman in the DC Universe- one that’s a surprisingly big name. However, for reasons unspecified, it seems as though talks about taking on the role ultimately fell through.
“One actor in particular, a pretty big star, wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I don’t think that’s the case.”
Most likely James Gunn is referring to Alan Ritchson, who recently confirmed that he spoke with the studio about taking on a role in the DC Universe, adding that he likely wouldn’t be playing Batman despite the many fancasts online. This leaves the playing field wide open, with new details about the casting process likely to trickle out in the coming months as the script gets polished.
