Following the end of The Flash, many fans wondered if George Clooney would pick up the cape and cowl to return as Batman to the broader DC Universe, particularly for The Brave and The Bold film. However, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn confirms that he won’t be Batman in the new universe.
Before The Flash was released, James Gunn publicly stated that the film would reset the currently established DC Extended Universe heading into the new DC Universe. This left many fans confused when the film’s ending showed a new Batman that wasn’t Michael Keaton or Ben Affleck; but George Clooney. When asked if Clooney would return for the upcoming The Brave and The Bold film, Gunn confirmed fans will be seeing a new actor in the role:
This of course leaves a new question of where The Flash sits in this new DC Universe James Gunn and Peter Safran are building. If Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen is in a universe where George Clooney is Batman, will Barry reset the timeline again before Batman: The Brave and The Bold? Or will fans see a different variation of Miller’s Scarlet Speedster in the new DC Universe. It seems as though the only way fans will get the answer is with time.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
