Creature Commandos is shaping up to be an amazing start to the DC Universe! James Gunn recently gave fans their first details about the show’s plot.
Despite coming out later this year, not much is known about Creature Commandos. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has kept the project close to his chest. However, he did recently tip his hand about the show’s place in the broader DC Universe, as well as why the team is being formed in the first place.
“The new series picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale,” Gunn explained during a recent appearance at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. “Which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions. Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”
This news is certain to confuse fans who still don’t understand the DC Universe’s continuity. However, it seems Creature Commandos is in lock-step with everything James Gunn has been doing up to this point. Though, interestingly, the team will seemingly be controlled by Amanda Waller, despite there not being much noise about Viola Davis’ return in the show.
The Animation Of The DC Universe
Even though Creature Commandos is the only animated show in production within the DC Universe, with the Blue Beetle series only recently announced, it seems James Gunn has big plans for the medium. While at the festival, he explained that it’s a cornerstone of his plans, as it allows his team to try unique and diverse things.
“It’s a cornerstone of the legacy we’ve been entrusted to carry at DC Studios and plays an integral role in the vision for our future storytelling. Since taking the reins, our true north has been to bring DC film, TV, animation and gaming into alignment under a single banner and bring a sense of unity and consistency into the DCU as a whole.”
“This frees us to create a range of products that are diverse and compelling, and deliver great stand-alone entertainment experiences on every medium, while also being part of a larger story that we’re telling within our unified DCU.”
Fans have been begging for more animated content set in an interconnected DC Universe for years. With Circe already confirmed for Creature Commandos, there have never been more requests for a Wonder Woman animated series. Though where James Gunn takes the medium, as well as the rest of the franchise, is yet to be seen.
Creature Commandos will debut on Max this December. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
