Is Darkseid the true “Big Bad” of the DC Universe? James Gunn reveals if he’ll be adapting one key aspect from Salvation Run into live-action.
The finale of Peacemaker season 2 delivered one of the biggest reveals in the history of the DC Universe. That being that James Gunn’s plan heading forward was to adapt, in some way, the Salvation Run storyline: a comic about a group of villains trapped on an abandoned planet. The twist?The plane is actually controlled by Darkseid as a training ground.
While James Gunn has yet to actually confirm Darkseid has anything to do with Salvation in the DC Universe, fans are already salivating at the idea that Salvation Run could lead into a Final Crisis-esque storyline for the franchise. After a literal decade of being first teased about seeing Darkseid on the silver screen, it’s a prospect fans are understandably excited about.
Does Darkseid Control Salvation In The DC Universe?
As with most discussion revolving around the DC Universe, James Gunn actually weighed in on the theories surrounding Salvation. When speaking with New Rockstars, the director expanded on the idea that Salvation Run may be very different from its comic counterpart, specifically pointing out that Darkseid won’t be the mastermind behind everything.
“Using Darkseid as the big bad now is not necessarily the thing because for a lot of reasons. Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way and because of Thanos and Marvel.”
This news will likely be a major downer for those begging to see Darkseid take a prominent role in the DC Universe. That being said, James Gunn never said Darkseid wasn’t coming- just that he wasn’t core to their adaptation of Salvation Run. Darkseid has always been a broader force in the franchise than just a Justice League villain, so it’ll be interesting to see how those other aspects of the character may or may not get adapted.
