Is the Joker getting his own spin-off series? James Gunn speaks on the recent rumor that Barry Keoghan is getting his own show in The Batman universe.
With The Penguin finally coming to an end, the rumor mill has been abound with talk on what spin-off could be next for The Batman universe. The one to catch the most traction revolves around Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who only played a small role in the first film, with it being said that he’ll have his own series set between the events of the second and third films in Matt Reeves’ franchise.
Much like almost every other rumor to come out of a DC property, James Gunn was quick to debunk this. The DC Studios co-head posted on Threads that there was absolutely no truth to the idea that Barry Keoghan would be getting his own spin-off as the Joker set in The Batman universe. While certainly a shame, it does make sense that plans for a show wouldn’t be formed before the film its following even enters production.
James Gunn Weighs In On The Batman’s Next Spin-Off
Even though James Gunn just debunked the rumor that Barry Keoghan would be starring in his own Joker show, that doesn’t mean he’s entirely impartial to The Batman‘s future. When asked jokingly on Threads if he thinks that the Condiment King should get his own spin-off, Gunn admitted that he completely supports the concept, leaving the ball in Matt Reeve’s court.
While this is obviously just some good natured ribbing on James Gunn’s end, it does confirm that he has some sort of say in what gets greenlit for Matt Reeves’ saga for The Batman. So in debunking the rumor about Barry Keoghan’s Joker, he did reveal that he likely knows what IS coming next for the universe. This potentially means any rumor he doesn’t debunk could be fair game for the next series.
