DC Studios Co-Head James Gunn Explains Delay For ‘The Authority’ Movie Casting

When wil fans see The Authority?

The Authority

Fans have been eagerly awaiting any news on The Authority. In a new Threads exchange, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn broke down why he hasn’t cast the upcoming film.

It’s an exciting time to be a DC Studios fan, with James Gunn and Peter Safran seemingly passing roles out like candy. With Maria Gabriela de Faria already cast as The Engineer in Superman, the internet has been wondering when the rest of The Authority film will be cast. According to Gunn, actors won’t be signed on until the script is done.

“We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and, in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished.” James Gunn wrote on Threads. “This is why some projects are moving faster than anticipated and others more slowly. It’s always gonna be quality first no matter what.

This response by James Gunn makes sense. After all, how can you cast a movie that’s not written? Not only might DC Studios miss members of The Authority they want to include, but they could potentially cast an actor in a role that gets cut from the script. While it’s certainly exciting to speculate, it seems fans won’t be getting any official news for a while.

DC Studios Casting News May Be Coming Soon

While The Authority may be a long way from being officially cast, that doesn’t mean DC Studios doesn’t have any tricks up their sleeve. When asked if only Creature Commandos and Supergirl had their scripts cemented, James Gunn simply replied “Nope,” implying other projects are deep into production.

There are two obvious projects at DC Studios that weren’t mentioned that have completed scripts: Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. Though given James Gunn’s involvement in both, it may be a bit cheeky to imply more projects have been completed. Other projects that could have finished scripts include James Mangold’s Swamp Thing or the Booster Gold series, though it’s likely only time will tell what projects Gunn means.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
