Wonder Woman is one of DC’s biggest faces and a core part of their trinity. In a recent tweet, James Gunn said that DC Studios is working on bringing Wonder Woman more into the world of animation.
While Wonder Woman’s cohorts in Batman and Superman have been no stranger to animated content, with each having multiple animated series to their name, Princess Diana has been largely absent from animation aside from crossover shows. When a recent post by a Twitter user pointed out that so much of her mythos has been left unexplored, Gunn confirmed that he was “working on it”. He would later go on to clarify what he meant by assuring fans that he was, in fact, working on new Wonder Woman animated content:
“No we’re working on getting Wonder Woman into more animation. I agree that there hasn’t been enough of her in that area and was one of the first things I brought up to the animation folks”.
A new Wonder Woman show wouldn’t be the only piece of animation in Gunn’s new DC universe. The upcoming Creature Commandos show was announced as part of the first chapter of Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. It’s unclear if Gal Gadot would reprise her role as Diana Prince in a new animated series or if the role would be recast.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
