How does one expect the unexpected?

James Gunn has stated that his upcoming Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, is going to be a lot different from what people expect.

James Gunn’s road with Guardians of the Galaxy and the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has been an interesting one. The director’s first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy, blew audiences and critics away with how good it was, quickly finding its way to the top of many people’s ranking of the shared universe films. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 wasn’t as praised as its predecessor but is nonetheless regarded as one of the better MCU sequels with a lot of hard-hitting moments. The director was all set to direct the third film before disaster struck.

James Gunn was unfortunately fired from the Marvel projects after a series of old Tweets came out where the director made some off-color jokes. The outcry against the firing and the fact that the “outrage” against the original Tweets turned out to be the work of an alt-right Twitter group eventually prompted Disney to rehire the director for the franchise’s third installment.

James Gunn has in the past spoken out about the firing but has not let it deter him from working on the new Guardians film, though the content will likely be darker than previous entries. He has teased in the past that the upcoming film will be “heavier” than previous installments but now he’s teasing the unexpected. In a recent interview with Collider, the director didn’t give anything away but did reveal that the film was going to be different from what people expected:

“It’s going great. Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I’m really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went… They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it’s not going to be the movie people… It’s different than what people are going to expect. It’s a hard road, but I’m really happy with it so far.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
