Who is the true villain of Man of Tomorrow? James Gunn gives his thoughts on recent speculation regarding Brainiac’s DC Universe debut.
When it was initially announced that Man of Tomorrow would one of the next projects to film for the DC Universe, fans were hoping that Brainiac would take a starring role as the villain. This was mostly built on hope and a few teases from BTS featurettes. That is, until James Gunn posted a picture of the script with a brain on the cover, all but confirming for many fans that the character will be playing a major role in the film.
However, things may not be as simple as they appear. James Gunn recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the script tease for Man of Tomorrow. The director admits that he knew speculation about Brainiac appearing in the DC Universe would be inevitable from that post. However, he doesn’t want to confirm nor deny either way what may be in store for the film.
“Listen, of course I wasn’t unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic. But I think we’ll hold off from what exactly is happening.”
Is Brainiac The Villain In Man Of Tomorrow?
While James Gunn doesn’t want to confirm things either way, it’s pretty clear to most that Brainiac will be playing some role in Man of Tomorrow, even if he isn’t the villain. It’s possible some other brain-based character takes the spotlight, such as Despero or the Black Mercy, but it would be absolutely shocking if the character doesn’t even get a mention in the DC Universe sometime soon.
In fact, many speculate that James Gunn may be introducing Brainiac into the DC Universe BEFORE Man of Tomorrow. There’s a lot of speculation that the villain may play a small role in the remaining episodes of Peacemaker season 2. While that’s far from confirmed, it would explain why the director has been so cagey about the last 3 episodes of the season.
