James Gunn explained why he believes Jared Leto’s Joker doesn’t need to be included in The Suicide Squad.

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad introduced the Joker to the DC Extended Universe with Academy Award winner Jared Leto as the new Clown Prince of Crime. While audiences had mixed reactions to Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker, there are a few fans who are wondering if the classic DC villain will return for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

While there remains some uncertainty regarding whether James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is a sequel or reboot to the first film, the cast for the upcoming DC feature includes a handful of returning favorites such as Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. During a Q&A session through James Gunn’s official Instagram Stories feed, the filmmaker addressed one fan who asked how he could justify excluding Jared Leto’s Joker from the list returning characters in The Suicide Squad:

“No one but me and a few others know all the characters in the movie, but if the Joker isn’t in the film, I don’t think it would be strange as he isn’t a part of the Suicide Squad in the comics.”
