Was the finale of Peacemaker a dud? James Gunn gives his thoughts on the negative reactions to the ending of season 2.
To say that expectations were high for the finale of Peacemaker season 2 would be an understatement. James Gunn managed to pull together a truly mind-boggling ending to the show’s freshman outing. And, with expectations of major cameos near the end of the show, fans though that the director would be topping that in both scale and spectacle.
Yet James Gunn seemed to bring the wisdom of King Solomon to the finale, somehow managing to completely split the fanbase and the internet at large. While there are those that defend the finale for its nuanced character writing and internal resolutions, the much louder contingent of fans have been expressing their distaste for the season 2 finale, especially given how it left Peacemaker himself.
James Gunn Breaks Silence On Negative Reviews
The director actually took to social media to respond to this influx of negative reviews for what is one of the most beloved shows in all of comic book media. In a post on Threads, James Gunn says that he definitely hears the feedback when it comes to season 2. However, he still personally loves the Peacemaker finale, even if he understands why others wouldn’t.
“Definitely! Not everyone can love everything. I love the episode, but I understand that not everyone does which is completely fair.”
In truth, while some may find the ending of Peacemaker season 2 unsatisfying, it’ll likely be far from the last time we see the characters. James Gunn has suggested he has no plans for a season 3 of the show. However, the contents of the finale all-but-confirm that a Checkmate series is in the works, and will likely pick up right where Peacemaker left off.
