James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new heads of DC’s film, television and animation efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery.

The Hollywood Reporter has officially announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran have been named co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, which is replacing the DC Films division at Warner Bros. Discovery. According to THR, Gunn and Safran’s hiring becomes effective on November 1st. The two have signed a four-year deal that makes Gunn exclusive to DC Studios, meaning that his Marvel days are now behind him.

Under their new roles at DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran will be reporting directly to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav. The two will also work closely with Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, the co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Film Group.

A new era for DC

“DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe,” said David Zaslav in a statement in a statement provided to THR. “Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling.”

Both James Gunn and Peter Safran have a close relationship with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Gunn developed The Suicide Squad and its HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker while Safran is the producer behind the Aquaman and Shazam! movies.

“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” added James Gunn and Peter Safran. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”
