Ever since James Gunn became co-chair of DC Studios, fans have been wondering what the tone of the new DC Universe will be. According to the director, the franchise won’t have a general tone, emphasizing the shift between different projects.
Given James Gunn is best known for making comedies like Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s no wonder fans would be concerned the entire DC Universe would have a more jovial tone, especially when compared to the old DC Universe created by Zack Snyder. However, it seems DC Studios is taking a new approach to such a large franchise, leaving the tone up to the filmmaker and their project:
“There will not be a general tone,” James Gunn revealed in a comment on a recent Instagram post. “Just as there is not a general tone in the great comics series. It will shift from project to project, filmmaker to filmmaker.”
It’s certainly refreshing to hear that James Gunn won’t be shunting the new DC Universe into a specific tone. The biggest problem fans have with modern comic book movies is that they all feel like the same CGI action fest. By keeping DC Studios flexible with its tone, the franchise has a strategic advantage over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which keeps a relatively similar tone across all of its projects.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
