James Gunn Teases Rocket’s Future In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

Avengers Endgame Rocket James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy

James Gunn teased fans that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will explore Rocket Racoon’s past.

Although he’s appeared in both Guardians of the Galaxy films alongside Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, fans have yet to see Rocket Raccoon’s origin story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the first film briefly showed the scars and implants on his back, the lovable rogue only briefly revealed that he didn’t ask to get made and that he was torn apart over and over. But the director teased that fans might see Rocket’s origin in the next film.

During the recent Quarantine Watch Party of the film hosted by ComicBook, James Gunn explained that the shot of Rocket’s scars and cybernetic implants in the first film sets up what he’s been planning for the hero throughout the series. He mentioned that Rocket Raccoon is a big part of what’s happening in the future, implying that we’ll see where he came from. Fans of the comics will know this involves Halfworld and Rocket’s love interest Lylla – a sentient Otter.

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC. Details on the third chapter of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
