Is Clayface cooked?

How far along is Clayface REALLY? James Gunn gives fans some insight on his day-to-day responsibilities when it comes to the DC Universe in a recent post.

James Gunn is the most accessible head of a movie studio fans have gotten in history. This is for better and worse. On one hand, it allows him to personally respond to theories and hype upcoming DC Universe projects like Clayface. On the other hand, many assume that’s Gunn’s only job, constantly bombarding him with fandom questions.

James Gunn recently provided fans with some information about what his daily responsibilities as co-chair of the DC Universe actually are. In the post, the director actually revealed new information about how far along Clayface‘s post-production actually is. Specifically, it seems as though he’s waiting on the first cut of the film.

“The fun of the job is there is no average day!” Gunn posted on Threads. “The majority of days currently are spent prepping Man of Tomorrow – storyboarding & department meetings & scouting & casting, interspersed with going over cuts of Supergirl & Lanterns,”

“Discussing marketing on all the projects, reading & making notes on new scripts, supporting the Batman 2 crew to make sure it goes smoothly, waiting for 1st cut of Clayface (can’t wait!), okaying designs for all kinds of stuff, & I’m sure many things I’m forgetting.”

Is Clayface Behind Schedule?

Clayface is officially due out in just over nine months. The fact that James Gunn doesn’t have a full cut of the film yet may worry some fans, especially given how much VFX the project likely needs. However, especially when it comes to blockbusters like films in the DC Universe, early VFX work is done alongside creating early cuts of the film.

Of course, this doesn’t mean a LOT of VFX work is done, as without a first cut it’s unclear what films and shots will make it to the final cut. However, given Clayface will likely need to use some bespoke models and complicated physics engines, it’s likely those are what’s being prepared while James Gunn waits for the initial cut of the DC Universe movie.

Clayface is set to release September 11th, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe!
