Rick Flag actor Joel Kinnaman commented on what fans can expect for the tone of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Warner Bros. is setting a new course for The Suicide Squad with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn helming the DC villain team’s new film. While The Suicide Squad will introduce several new characters to the DC Extended Universe, James Gunn is bringing back a handful of familiar faces from the previous film, including Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.
Of course, some fans are wondering what they can expect from the tone of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Joel Kinnaman offered some insight on the matter during an interview on Variety’s The Big Ticket podcast. After praising James Gunn as “an incredible guy,” Joel Kinnaman explained that he feels like he is making his first comedy while working on The Suicide Squad:
“He’s written a fantastic script. It’s so funny… I feel like I’m shooting my first comedy. There are a lot of really funny people there. It’s like a learning experience. I’m around a lot of incredible funny people.”

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the Suicide Squad in his upcoming movie.
