The secrets of Supergirl!

Is Supergirl secretly a prequel? James Gunn reveals when the upcoming DC Universe film takes place in the current timeline of slated projects.

One of the biggest things fans have been obsessed with in the DC Universe is the timeline. Despite every project currently released taking place in linear order, fans are convinced that James Gunn is hiding a secret prequel/sequel that will blow the lid off the entire saga. And given the next film out from the studio is Supergirl, it’s now being hit with the newest wave of speculation.

Specifically, some fans believe that Supergirl isn’t a follow-up to Superman – they think it’s a hidden prequel. Some believe that it’s meant to show what happened to the Woman of Tomorrow prior to seeing her debut in the DC Universe, with the film ending with Kara leaving Krypto with her cousin to take care of him.

Does Supergirl Take Place Before Superman?

James Gunn, as with every fun theory that comes out of the DC Universe, took to social media to set the record straight. When asked about where Supergirl fits in the franchise’s timeline on Threads, the DC Studios head confirmed that the film will take place between the events of Superman and its upcoming sequel Man of Tomorrow.

This shouldn’t come as a shock to any DC Universe fan that knows what happened in the comic Supergirl is based on, and what James Gunn is likely planning for his Superman sequel. Still, in a world where rumors run wild as a deliberate marketing strategy, it is sometimes a relief to see a director put the kibosh on things sooner than later.

Supergirl is set to release on June 26, 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe!
