Is Superman falling behind at the box office? James Gunn speaks out on reports that the film needs to hit an astonishing $650 million to break even.

Superman has been flying high at the box office. The film has surpassed a lot of early projections, with James Gunn’s sophomore outing in the DC Universe’s latest reboot recently passing $500 million worldwide. This has left many fans assuming that the film has already well-surpassed its production and marketing budget, making it a smash hit for Warner Bros.

However, there are others that aren’t so optimistic. Recent reports have suggested that the film needs to make a whopping $650 million at the box office just to break even, let alone make money. This would be a cataclysmically ambitious number, something that would be a struggle to reach even in the hayday of the superhero genre. Though, given the current financial straits of Warner Bros. Discovery, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

How Much Does Superman Need To Break Even?

As with any report about the DC Universe, James Gunn took to social media to give his 10 cents about the topic. Responding to a post asking about the $650 million figure, the director confirmed that a target that high to break even would be ridiculous. Albeit, Gunn didn’t openly reveal how much the project needed to make its budget back.

Reports suggest that the budget for Superman sits at $225 million. Given how aggressive James Gunn and Warner Bros. Discovery were with marketing the film, it’s likely they spent a pretty penny on advertisements. However, this doesn’t account for the money gained from tax credits, sponsorships, and merchandise. Even at the most pessimistic, it’s likely that Superman didn’t need more than $350 million to break even, something the film has healthily surpassed at the box office.
