James Gunn may be taking Pa Kent in a surprising direction! The director speaks on the character’s role in the Superman reboot following the posting of a new cast photo.

Photos from the production of Superman are finally finding their way onto the internet as filming picks up in Macon, Georgia. Following a long day of shooting, Superman writer and director James Gunn took it upon himself to share one of those pictures featuring the project’s supporting cast, including actors for iconic characters such as Cat Grant and Pa Kent.

The most interesting part of this cast photo from James Gunn is that Pa Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince) is hanging out with Daily Planet reporters Cat Grant (Mikaela Hoover), Ron Troupe (Chris McDonald), and Perry White (Wendell Pierce). It’s possible the Superman team shot scenes in both Smallville and Metropolis on the same day, given fans have already seen Kent Farms in set photos. However, this may also reveal that Pa Kent is making his way east to Metropolis.

Pa Kent’s Role In The Superman Reboot

That speculation isn’t the only thing fans learned about Pa Kent’s role in the upcoming reboot. When asked if the character would be alive during the events of the movie, James Gunn responded that he wouldn’t have cast someone like Pruitt Taylor Vince in Superman if he was going to be dead during the entire film.

This may come as a shock to fans whose primary exposure to Superman was through Zack Snyder’s reboot, but Pa Kent isn’t often depicted as dead in Superman media. While he did die in the original golden age run of the character, most incarnations don’t have him pass away until much later in the hero’s career, if at all! James Gunn may very well be keeping the character alive through the first leg of the DC Universe. Or at least, until he needs to raise the stakes!

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
